When your net worth was a million dollars, how did that affect the way you perceived the world, and lived your life? By the time I was 26 years old, I had a little over $4 million worth of real estate; a little over a million net worth, and I was making about $250,000 a year. Now, thats fun! We were having a blast. I mean, we went to Hawaii, and we liked it, so we went back. I went and got me a Jaguar, and man, within 90 days, I was a Jaguar. I bought my wife some of those sparkly things, and they werent big enough, so we got her some more. It was fun! I had lots of stuff and I thought stuff meant I was successful. When you lost everything, how did your lifestyle and way of thinking change? I remember standing in a scolding hot shower and crying because I was so scared. Finally, with a brand new baby and a toddler and a marriage hanging on by a thread, we hit bottom, and we were bankrupt. For a minute, I laid around at the bottom of that mess and cried and whined and moaned and blamed everybody else. But then I decided I was going to learn how money really works. My wife, Sharon and I were able to turn around and start walking together again. We decided that we would never go back into debt again. I drove an old car that would barely make it from point A to point B. Our children wore consignment clothes. Although our lifestyle changed, we had a sense of control, a sense of destiny. How did you start your show, and what steps did you take to build your audience in the beginning? Almost 20 years ago, a local bankrupt radio station asked me to come on the air and answer a few financial questions and the phones began to ring! Since the station was bankrupt, they couldn’t afford to pay me. But, I enjoyed doing the show and would come back weekly. I took my first few years doing the radio show to learn about the radio business. We slowly added new radio stations. Now, the ‘The Dave Ramsey Show’ can be heard on over 450 radio stations across the country. Your bestselling books are everywhere. How important was the book to extend your personal brand? I’ve had 3 New York Times best-sellers, but that is only a portion of my brand. In 1992, I began selling my first book, Financial Peace ¸ out of the trunk of my car. It wasn’t until 1997 that Viking published the book and it became a New York Times best-seller. A personal brand doesn’t develop overnight. It takes years and years of extremely hard work. Maybe it’s the dream position you’ve always wanted, working for a company you’ve always wanted to be a part of, or even if it simply has flexible hours but for one reason or another, things don’t go to plan… Job rejection is something all of us will go through, and it can feel like the end of the world, especially if you were really excited about the position. It often leads to a period of self-doubt and beating yourself up about what you could have written on the application form or said in the interview. It’s difficult to get out of the rut that job rejection puts you in, but I’m going to highlight the positive aspects that an experience like this can offer you, so you can bounce back stronger than ever! Re-evaluate the situation Rather than thinking about the application process in reference to ‘what I could’ve done’, think about it in terms of ‘what can I do next time?’ The job market is constantly flowing and there’s bound to be another similar, if not even better, role that comes up. Is there anything you could do that would possibly give you the edge over other candidates in the future? Perhaps conduct some research into courses that could give you extra qualifications in the field you are interested in, or take a class on interview skills. Even asking a family or friend to partake in a fake job interview to give you pointers could be useful. If you’re a student, booking a session with your university’s career advisor could be very beneficial, as they would be able to highlight any areas of your applications that you could work on. Dont beat yourself up Getting angry at yourself for not being successful in your application for a job will not solve anything. Being proactive about what you could work on in order to secure the next opportunity that arises as mentioned above, would be of much more benefit. Yes, you may feel like you want to lay in bed and eat your weight in ice cream, but you need to pick yourself up, dust yourself down, and get yourself back out there. You’ve got this, and you know you’ve got this… You just need to realise and remind yourself of your worth. You are capable of doing so many great things and this one failed application doesn’t change that in the slightest. Trust that you are where youre meant to be Job rejection, although a horrible thing, gives you the perfect opportunity to self-reflect and grow in terms of your career, but also as a person. So you lost out on a job you were excited about it simply wasn’t meant to be, and that’s okay. It just means there are a thousand other doors opening for you. The age-old idea of rejection pushing you towards bigger and better things is completely and utterly true, even if it is somewhat cheesy. I am fully confident that you will get to where you want to be, even if its in a way in which you didn’t at first realise was possible. Holidays can be magical for recruiters and job seekers - I love stories. Success stories are the best. Today, I am happy to share a magical story from my friend The Recruiting Animal. I dont know if Animal remembers this, but almost 2 years ago, we disagreed about something (I dont know what), and when we were finished with our email exchanges, he said I was invited to fight with him any time! Not being the fighting type, I havent taken him up on it yet! However, Animal was kind enough to share this story, which I hope will inspire some job seekers at this time of year. (He even sent the accompanying photo!) Im a headhunter and a few years ago I was looking for a Quality Control Supervisor. But this wasnt any ordinary QC Manager. This person would have no direct reports but needed to have a PhD in Chemistry and a strong background in fermented products, specifically yogurt. When I got the search I was told that there was no one in the country with the right background. Why they gave it to me, then, I dont know. In the end, we filled the job with a terrific yogurt man but in the course of the search I investigated a number of engineers who didnt have yogurt experience but worked in breweries. To get to some of them I had to go through one admin person. The problem was that she never picked up the phone and I didnt want to leave a message. So I called and called and you know when I got her? On December 24th. Christmas Eve. I wanted to knock off work but I was in a bind and against my better judgement I picked up the phone and, like a miracle, she did too. It was great. I could hear the party going on in the background, she was very friendly and she gave me all the info I needed. What a present for me. I told this story to someone recently and he scoffed at the notion that you have a good shot at reaching otherwise unavailable people during the holiday season. But Im not saying everybodys going to be there. Just that some people will. And those might be the people you want to talk to who never usually pick up their phones. When lots of people are away, however, theyre not as busy as usual and thats when they change their normal habits and thats when you have a chance to catch them. Nothing is life is certain. But if you want to get through to someone and youre not on a beach in Florida, whats stopping you from trying? Friends, it happened to me. And if it happened to me, it can happen to you too. Don't worry; it's just a list. Don't stress. Just keep in mind that this list is just a starting point, and you can add things later on.Once you have created a list of all your skills and your education, you should go back and edit your resume for some extra care. Do not rush through this part. This is actually the most important part of the resume writing process. You need to make sure that the information provided about you is accurate and professional. If you edit the resume too much, it may end up looking like it was written by someone else, who was either not educated or did not write well.To give you an example, let's say you wrote your resume after a two-week interview. Michael Lewis How I Knew When to Quit My Wall Street Job As told by Michael Lewis to Mike Lewis, in Mike’s new book WHEN TO JUMP: When the Job You Have Isn’t the Life You Want I tell my seven-year-old all the time: “Allow yourself to be lucky.” When I was his age, I used to think, “I’m so lucky that if I just look around, I can find money on the ground.” And I often did. Because grown-ups drop it everywhere. It’s in seats, on the sidewalk, everywhere. It’s amazing what you can find if you’re looking for it. Sometimes I’ll tell my son, “Let’s just go find valuable stuff.” And you wouldn’t believe what we find. All you have to do is keep yourself in a frame of mind to be open to what’s dealt to you. To back up a bit, I grew up in New Orleans. There was not much of an orientation toward careers, certainly not for kids, and I didn’t start thinking about college until I was in my junior year of high school. At that time, my ambitions amounted to getting up every morning, going to school, playing baseball, and when I graduated, going to Princeton. Nothing beyond that. I thought that once I got in I was done, that I didn’t have to do anything else, so I didn’t think much about what happened after. I majored in art history because I liked it. There weren’t really career tracks at Princeton. I mean, if you wanted to be an engineer, you majored in engineering. And there was premed, of course. Neither of those interested me. So the only implicit career choice I made was not following all the people who majored in economics because it could possibly get you a job on Wall Street. Junior year, I started getting involved in my thesis composition. Princeton’s senior thesis is a really big deal. Your whole senior year is basically organized around it, and it’s a book. I think mine was forty thousand, maybe fifty thousand words. It was 130 pages, and it took forever. But the writing of it was what changed everything for me. I loved it. It transported me. I thought, “This is what I want to do.” At first, I thought that meant I wanted to be an art historian. But my thesis advisor told me that was crazy. There wouldn’t be any jobs. Told me flat out that I just shouldn’t do it. So it took me a little while, but I realized that what I wanted to do was write books. Actually, to be specific: I wanted to write senior theses. But I didn’t dive into writing full-time. I remember thinking that too many writers don’t ever do anything else, so I should go have lots of adventures that would give me material. My first adventure was in finance, starting with a pass/fail class my senior year in the econ department that interested me enough to get a master’s in economics. While getting my master’s, I was at a dinner party sitting next to these women whose husbands ran Salomon Brothers International. I got along quite well with one of the women, and she made her husband hire me after the dinner. It was just about the best possible place to land on Wall Street at that moment. They were extremely successful, and I would have been crazy not to do it. By the time I started at Salomon Brothers, I had begun writing and submitting unsolicited magazine articles on the side. They were rejected a lot. Eventually, I got a foot in the door at a few places, and they started publishing my work while I was still on Wall Street. Even though I was doing pretty well at Salomon Brothers, I knew that writing was what I wanted to do full-time and that getting published was my first step toward leaving. I remember when I told my dad that I wanted to quit. I had just gotten my bonus, and it was big. I think it was something like $160,000. My salary was around $60,000 at the time, and I was twenty-seven. My dad thought I was crazy to walk away from that kind of money. He said, “Stay ten years and you won’t have to work any longer. Then you can write your novels till you die.” But when I looked around at the guys who were ten years older than me, I saw that none of them could leave. If I’d stayed, I would have been trapped by that success; the money would have gotten too big, and my life would’ve changed. I also didn’t have any kids then. Once you have children, it changes everything. It’s not just your own life you’re affecting. It’s a family’s life. I was really lucky in that regard. I didn’t have any student debt, and I didn’t have any other financial responsibilities, like taking care of sick parents or anything like that. So I didn’t have to let money rule my decisions. Some people don’t have that liberty. Quitting that job felt like going out on a tightrope, but with a really nice safety net underneath it. The people at Salomon Brothers were actually charmingly indulgent of my literary ambitions, letting me write about Wall Street as long as I did it under a pseudonym. I used my mother’s maiden name, and it was those pieces that got me my book contract. When I told my colleagues that I was quitting, they thought I was nuts. They were very sweet about it. They were concerned. They took me into a room and said, “You’re sure you wanna do this? This is a mistake.” I knew what I wanted to do and just thought to myself, “None of these people are qualified to tell me what to do with my life.” They thought I had a big future there because I had done well the first couple of years. But I knew a lot of my success was somewhat fluke-ish and that it would dry up the moment I was exposed as someone who was basically not interested. It’s very hard to keep up with anything you’re not really interested in. It was interesting for a little while, and then it got boring. Once it did, I seized the first opportunity to leap out of it. Looking back, it seems like a giant risk to quit a job that paid me all kinds of money at Salomon for a fairly unknown future as a writer. But I knew I really wanted to do it. There wasn’t a shred of doubt, and I was getting so sick of going to work there every morning. So it was not a terribly hard decision, and it didn’t feel like that much of a risk. When I left, I had scraped together enough writing to get a book contract, which meant that someone was publishing a book I’d written. I thought, “Hell, if someone publishes a book by me, I can make my way as a writer.” I was twenty-seven when I quit my job and almost twenty-nine when the book came out. During that period, I did not feel like, “Oh, my God, if I don’t make it here, if this doesn’t succeed, I’m screwed.” It was more like, “I’m doing exactly what I want to do, and I’ll just figure out a way to make it work.” I knew that as long as I allowed myself to be lucky, I would find some money on the ground.
